How to structure scope creep answers: Root cause analysis — interviewers want to know you understand why scope creep happens, not just that it's bad. Root causes: unclear acceptance criteria, no formal change process, stakeholders who bypass the process, poor initial alignment between business goals and scope. Trade-off language — the phrase "What would you like to deprioritise to make room for this?" is one of the most effective PM tools. It prevents the PM from becoming the blocker ("you’re saying no to me") and puts the decision with the business owner. Change control vocabulary — Change request: a formal document capturing the proposed change, the estimated impact on scope/timeline/cost, and the approval decision. Prioritisation frameworks in detail: RICE scoring — formula: (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort. Reach: number of users per time period. Impact: multiplier (3=massive, 2=high, 1=medium, 0.5=low, 0.25=minimal). Confidence: % certainty in estimates. Effort: person-months. Risk management: identify early, quantify likelihood and impact, present options. Scope reduction — deliberately removing features from a release to protect the date. Also called "descoping." Requires stakeholder agreement and is preferable to a late surprise. Trade-off triangle (also: project management triangle / iron triangle) — the relationship between scope, time, and cost: fixing any two determines the third. Product metrics vocabulary: Adoption rate — the percentage of eligible users who use a feature within a defined period of first availability. Formula: (unique users who used feature ÷ total eligible users) × 100. Benchmark: a new core feature typically targets 30–50% adoption in 30 days; a niche feature may target 10–20%. Feature retention — the percentage of users who return to use a feature repeatedly after first use. High adoption + low retention = the feature attracted curiosity but didn't deliver lasting value. High retention + low adoption = the feature is loved by a segment but has discoverability problems. North Star Metric — the single metric that best captures the value a product delivers to users and correlates with long-term business success. Example: Spotify's NSM is time spent listening. All feature metrics should connect to the North Star. Product hypothesis — the testable assumption behind a feature. Format: "We believe that [change] will cause [user segment] to [behaviour], resulting in [measurable outcome], which we will observe by [metric] moving from [baseline] to [target] within [timeframe]." Writing the hypothesis forces precision about what you're testing. Ship and forget anti-pattern — building a feature and moving on without measuring impact. Results in a product that grows in surface area but not in value, increasing maintenance burden while solving no additional user problems.
